A collection of freeware Solitaire card games for Windows

Solitaire (or patience) is a family of single-player card games. Known as "Patience" in British English and "Solitaire" in American English. Microsoft's Solitaire is the card game "Klondike".

Freeware: Legally obtainable software that you may use at no cost, monetary or otherwise, for as long as you wish. Definition as determined by the readers of alt.comp.freeware (a.c.f.)

Please note that I have not followed 100% the standard definition of freeware. This site include some abandonware, donationware, charityware, giftware, demos, and some non-intrusive, non-nagging 'lite' versions of commercial games

The Top Five

PySol icon

PySol 4.60

PySol is a great collection of 201 solitaire card games. It has a very nice look and feel and features multiple cardsets. Sound, background music, unlimited undo & redo, load & save games, statistics, hint, demo games. Among the supported games are classics like Aces Up, Baker's Game, Canfield, FreeCell, Forty Thieves, Golf, Klondike, Pyramid, Scorpion, Spider, Yukon, and many more. It also has several Hanafuda, Hex A Deck, Tarock and Puzzle game types.

OpenSource (GNU) and written in Python. Author: Markus F.X.J Oberhumer (2000). There is a new version (4.82) on the homepage, but it's not compiled as a executable Windows file (only Linux).

	PySol 4.41 (3,8 mb) is an older version of Pysol which has 100 solitaire Mahjongg (tile-matching) games that were removed in newer versions

Solitude 1.52

Solitude is a good compilation of 91 solitaire card games. It's selection gives an good overview of the spectrum of of card-bases solitaire games there exists. The graphics may not be fancy, but the gameplay is strong. Undo, replay and statistics. Most games are designed for the screen resolutions of 640x480 and 800x600.

Wiz Solitaire 1.12

Wiz Solitaire is a collection of 15 solitaire card games. It strong points are the possibility it gives you to create your own decks and the ability to resize the cards from 54x80 to 176x260 (in total nine different card sizes). The default 'dragon' deck is beautiful and other people have made more than 20 high quality decks.

With the deck Editor you can use your own gif, jpg, bmp & wmf pictures to make a cardset. It can also use your own pictures as a background. Also support for rkp/reko cardsets.

AS-Solitaire is a nice Solitaire collection with 40 games. The game has a non-standard GUI (made in Blitz), but do not let that scare you away. It's well worth the little extra time to figure it out.

The game uses rkp/reko cardsets and the author is a very active cardset maker (visit the homepage often for new sets). You can also use your own pictures as background. Other features: Timer, highscore, solitaire rules.

It's main drawback is that it seems it's optimized for a screen resolution of 800x600 - no good on very large screens....

SolKan Solitaire 4.0

SolKan Solitaire have 198 different solitaire games. It's main strength is the ability to create many more games by using the customization dialogue boxes for Klondike, Spider, Golf and Forty Thieves. The game also automatically resize the cards according to which game you play (there are six different sizes) and your screen resolution.

You can also create your own cardsets (facecards and cardbacks) through editing the standard bitmap face card file [a slight problem here - look below]. Also customizable backgrounds. Strong automove and many ways to select and choose your type of game. Highscore, sound, undo (limited), rules. But the graphics are begin to show their age a bit.

Author: John Kanold (Canada). Made in 1999. "No-nag shareware", but site dead since 2004 and the game must be considered abandonware now. 16-bit application (req.: Win 3.1+).

The standard bitmap face card file to make your own cardsets are no longer available (I don't have it anymore - do you know someone who has it?). One solution is to download my Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) set and work from that one. 1,8 mb.

SolKan 3.0 (423 kb). Made in 1998 (130+ games). Some people have reported trouble with using their own cardsets in version 4.

WinSol customizations

There exists dozen of graphic modifications (or 'hacks') to the original Solitaire (Klondike) game that have been in Windows since v. 3.0 (Wes Cherry 1989).

Francisco J. Campos (Dominatrix) have made more than 30 customizations of the original WinSol with a variety of subjects. Quality? Some good, some awful (it's a learning process!).

Francisco have allowed me to offer several of his customizations for download here (themes: Occult, Ouija, Quiro, Robots and three pinups decks).

There is also a collection of Francisco's work on the 'Adult Solitaire' site (warning: 18+ only!)
